OBJECTIVES

Technologies of computers are widely applied to all fields of medical sciences, including clinical chemistry, diagnosis, therapy, and patient care based on the rapid advancement of computer technology. Especially, this technology contributes to the advancement of medical imaging systems such as X-ray CT, MRI, and ultrasound imaging systems.

In addition, during recent years, many medical instruments have incorporated computers for their control systems and data processing. Therefore, the present medical technology is already presently highly dependent on computer power and will only be more so in the future.

A good example is medical imaging. Data processing of huge amounts of image data derived from present medical imaging systems can be utilized not only for diagnosis but also for assisting surgical operations by planning, simulating and validating the surgical procedure.

However, when reconstructed three dimensional images are utilized in medical operations, surgeons need a three dimensional imaging system that can extract necessary information in real time for surgical decision much faster and more accurately than present medical imaging systems which are designed for diagnosis. On-line three dimensional reconstruction with on-line medical imaging instruments must be also developed. The development of these systems will enable the introduction of computer based assisting devices for surgical operations, including computerized surgical instruments.

In view of the recent rapid progress in this field all over the world, the Japan Society of Computer Aided Surgery organized the First International Symposium on Computer Aided Surgery (ISCAS '94) on October 17th, 1994 in Tokyo, Japan. Guest speakers were invited from leading research institutes all over the world and presented their papers on Computer Aided Surgery.

At the meeting of program committee in ISCAS '94, we decided to continue this outstanding event annually. ISCAS '95 will be held on October 14th, 1995 at Tokyo, Japan and its objectives are to stimulate an exciting exchange of thoughts and progress in Computer Aided Surgery and to contribute to the advancement of this new medical technology.
